The next thing that we do is head up the stairs. Sounds simple right? It's around 350 stairs in a tiny spiral staircase (see below). It was hard to have people pass us going down. It was a work out, but well worth it because of the view we got when we got on the very top. The picture of me with the door is at the very top of the church.
After getting some pizza we next headed inside the church. It's gorgeous! These pictures don't really do it any justice, but the reflections of the stained glass windows were bounding off the walls every where. That was probably the highlight of my day it was really amazing. We then took a tour of the catacombs of the church. Kind of creepy, but very interesting. The first had caskets for the more recent deaths of Bishops and other people, but we got deeper and they showed us the remains of others. You could actually see their bones lying still with some of their clothes remains still around them. We went a little deeper and saw these rooms with stacks of bones from all the black plague victims. It was weird to see hundreds of femur bones stacked and a couple of skulls here and there. They weren't originally stacked, but they did so because the remains were sticking up the church so they went and cleaned the bones off and then put the back and stacked them. We of course then had to go get some gelato. It's so delicious here. I can't get enough of it! I also tried what they call the state drink "Almdudler" I say it's a mix of ginger ale and appleish. It's definitely different, but I really like it. We explored more of Vienna and went back to our hostel after a while. It was a very interesting first day!
Beautiful church! And I love your outfit :)
